Copper Grooving Common Problems: Burr, Dimension Drift and Tool Wear
Copper's high ductility and thermal conductivity make burr, dimension drift and tool wear the top three grooving pains. Understanding causes is half the cure.
Excessive burr: usually dull tools, oversized feed or weak clamping rigidity. Fixes: replace/resharpen tools regularly (use dedicated high-rake tools for copper); reduce feed per pass and increase passes; reinforce fixtures to stop workpiece chatter.
Dimension drift: typically tool wear, thermal deformation or CNC parameter drift. Fixes: monitor critical dimensions with real-time inspection and alarm thresholds; warm up before production; periodically verify machine geometry and ballscrew backlash compensation.
Abnormal tool wear: copper's tendency to weld onto the edge is a common cause. Fixes: use high-rake, mirror-edge dedicated tools; apply cutting fluid for lubrication and cooling; keep grooving speed in a safe range to avoid overheating.
Management level: keep a tool life log (scheduled changes by part count), first-article and sampling inspection, and lock process parameters against casual changes — these habits reduce all three problems at the source.
